Glenn Davis asked some of the players competing in the Free Kick Masters 2008 event. Here are a few select questions from his interview with Lukas Podolski...
Glenn Davis: Are you excited to show off your soccer talents to the American public?
Lukas Podolski: I am looking forward to this event. So far, I have not played in the U.S., so it is something special for me.
Davis: How serious will the players be in trying to win this free-kick competition?
Podolski: I can speak only on my behalf. But I think that everyone will give his best.
Davis: What was your most memorable free kick goal?
Podolski: That was my 1-0 goal versus Schalke 04 in April 2006. From an almost impossible angle, I scored a direct free kick in the upper right corner. This goal was voted “Goal of the month” in Germany.
Davis: What do you think an event like this can do for the sport of soccer in the United States? Can it illustrate the beautiful game?
Poldolski: Goals are the essence of soccer. And free-kick goals are often very beautiful. I hope this event helps to attract many new spectators to the game of soccer and particularly to league games in MLS.
Davis: How did you become so proficient at taking free kicks? Did you practice as a youth? Do you have a story training as a young boy in your home country?
Podolski: From as early as I can remember, I have played football every day. Constant practice leads to a pretty good shot technique, which is the basic requirement to score from a free-kick.
